District 2 has been inadequately represented in dealing with these
issues that impact the lives (and pockets) of all Texans.
School Finance
Our current school funding is both inadequate and inequitable.
Per student funding varies from about $4,500 to more than $8,100
per student. The average teacher salary in Texas is more than $5,000
below the national average. We need to equalize the per-student
funding to provide our children with a quality education and the
skills they need to compete and succeed. We must also ensure that
our teachers are rewarded for their efforts and provide them with
the necessary tools to teach our children.
Economic Development
New businesses and the expansion of established companies create
jobs, housing, more retail, and an expanded tax base, reducing
the tax burden on all of our citizens. We need to provide economic
development incentives for job creation while supporting our existing
businesses.
Transportation
As District 2 and the state grow, our transportation needs are
increasing. TxDoT needs to be streamlined to use current funding
more efficiently. Once this has been achieved, any increased funding
may come from local options (approved by voters) through an additional
fuel tax. Property rights must be protected.
Water/Wastewater
Texas' population is expected to increase from the current 21 million
to 46 million by 2060. A state water plan adopted by the legislature
has never been funded. It includes conservation measures, water
reclamation and reuse, and new reservoir construction. One of the
first bills I will introduce as your District 2 Representative will
be to fund the Water Development Board to provide low interest loans
to communities to fix water lines to stop losses through leakage,
conserving water for future.
Immigration
I will work to secure our borders with increased Federal funding
and will oppose any amnesty. We need to insist that all immigrants
follow the law.
Voter ID
Texas must require photo ID to vote. We need to protect our way
of life by preventing voter fraud.
